Sonoita-Bisbee Spring Bike Tour

March 27-28, 2010

sonoita-bisbee2

With the spring sun beckoning you to Bisbee and the wind at your back, travel east on Hwy 82 and feast your eye on rolling grassland country with the lofty Huachuca Mountains at the horizon. Join us for a weekend of camaraderie, fitness, and fun in Bisbee. The ride is for the fit rider who will enjoy a visit to this quaint old mining town, now an arts colony, nestled in Southeast Arizona's Mule Mountains. Shuttle will allow riders with less appetite for long distances with steep hills to still participate in this scenic ride and enjoy themselves!

Meet Saturday morning in Sonoita at the Fairgrounds, intersection of Hwys 82 & 83, for the start of the ride. Allow at least 1 hour driving time from Tucson to Sonoita, more coming from the NW side.

DAY ONE:  Ride to Bisbee via Tombstone, "The Town Too Tough to Die".  Stop at the Tombstone City park for linch at SAG stop #2sonoita-bisbee1.

DAY TWO:  Fort Huachuca is closing the main gate on the weekends due to construction. It will therefore be necessary to change the route a bit for a second look at the beautiful countryside. New route map will be coming shortly.

Luggage will be back at the Fairgrounds by 12 noon.

Make reservations early if you are planning to stay at a B & B. Use only places names on our list, where we will deliver your luggage. If staying at places not on our list, please make your own luggage arrangements.

Camping will also be available, as in previous years, at Higgins City Park in Bisbee.

TTM Training Rides
Tour of the Tucson Mountains Training Rides

The 23rd annual Tour of the Tucson Mountains bike ride will be held on Sunday April 25th 2010.

This March and April, GABA will be hosting six TTM training rides. These rides will be held on the west side of Tucson and cover most of the TTM route. Please check the Day Ride Biketivities section of the update or the Event Calendar for ride leader contact information, start time, start location and ride pace.

Now is the time to begin your training if you are thinking about entering either the 27 mile course or the 70 mile course. Since this is a Day Ride event, GABA will not be providing support, so please come prepared for the ride by bringing water and snacks. Helmets are mandatory for the ride and please obey all traffic laws. Also, you should show up at least 15 minutes before the planned start time so the ride leader can go over the route and highlight any traffic concerns and re-groupings, if any. You will also be required to sign the clubs Ride Waiver Form. All of this will take some time, so for the ride to leave on time, please show up early and have a great training ride.

Bike 2 The Zoo for Ice Cream!!
Saturday, April 17
In Conjunction with Bike Fest ‘10

Come and join us for a bike ride - and for lots of fun (and ice cream) at the Reid Park Zoo!

On Saturday, April 17, GABA will have rides starting from various locations around Tucson, in varying distances and speeds. You decide which level and distance you want to pedal, and start with the group that most closely matches your cycling preference. All rides will converge at the zoo between 9 and 12 pm. Ride options are listed at the bottom of this article, in the Biketivities section of the UPDATE and on the GABA website www.bikegaba.org in the Day Rides section (click on Rides).

Upon arrival at the zoo, stop at the GABA table which will be set up outside of the entrance to get your ice cream cone/cup voucher (limited to the first 300 cyclists). Free bike valet parking will be available Reid Park Zoo form 9 am to 4 pm for every helmeted rider, by the City of Tucson.

A bicycle helmet is required on all GABA rides and is your free entry into the zoo. After your bike is securely parked, just take your voucher to the snack shop window and redeem it for either a chocolate or vanilla (Schwan's) ice cream cone/cup. Yummy for your tummy!!!! Your participation in any bike ride to the zoo is your ticket to a free ice cream treat - what a Sweet Deal! Ice cream vouchers may be redeemed from 9 am to 3 pm. You do not have to be a GABA member to participate in this, or any GABA ride or event.

You are free to stay at the zoo as long as you like, or return with your ride leader to your point of departure.
